Thanks for the add! 2022 AWD Transit short wheel base lifted and built-out for moderate off-roading. Exploring a rocky wash somewhere south of Prescott, Arizona and Engineer Pass, Colorado. I recently returned from a 3,600 mile road and overlanding trip through the Southwest that included driving on trails just north of the Mexican board across AZ and NM including the Camino del Diablo. Heading to Baja for a month of exploring in a couple of weeks and looking for overlanding opportunities.
I teach van off-roading at Overland Expo in Flagstaff, Arizona and Loveland, Colorado. I’ve been doing journeys to explore remote places by vehicle since the 1970’s, including Alaska, Russia, Mexico, and the US western states. We document our recent adventures on our YouTube channel @AWDTransitOverland. This library of trips should help with your research and hopefully inspire you to explore these amazing places.
It was recently suggested to me on a forum that we’re not “overlanding” until we reach Malaysia…
…because we’re container shipping from Australia to Indonesia and the onto SE Asia.
It made us pause.
Australia is an island continent. There’s no ferries or land borders to drive across.
So what actually defines overlanding?
Is it uninterrupted landmass?
Or long-term, self-supported vehicle travel across countries and cultures — even when geography requires a ship?
We know what it means to us.
Curious — what’s your definition?
(No wrong answers — genuinely interested.)
